Class description

Students will create a beautiful and unique Batik style gourd with banyan root (from the famous banyan trees of Hilo) coiled on top. We will apply the Hawaiian pattern which can be amended to your liking. There will be a choice of color tones.....blues, greens or burgundy. We will coil a few rows of banyan root on the rim and top it off with a Philodendron rose. The rose technique can be used with a wide range of naturals and is a great skill to have for projects, topping gift packages, etc. This a value packed class that will give students many new skills.

This class is for all levels of gourders.

I will supply paints, dyes, banyan root, philodendron, all batik supplies, all coiling supplies.

NOTE: Due to early travel arrangements that Jelena must make to teach at our festival, the class cancellation cut-off date is August 1, 2019.

What you are required to bring

A cleaned 6-7" (approx) diameter and 7" inch (approx) gourd with top cut off and cleaned inside and out. Any tall (not canteen) style sitting gourd can be used. Students can pre-paint the inside if desired.

A charcoal pencil to outline your design on the gourd if you have one. A pencil will do, but the charcoal marks are easier to remove.

A drilling tool, dremel or regular drill, to drill holes to pass through a fat needle. I will have 3 dremels to share with students who do not have.

Please let me know if you want a prepared gourd brought for you. [email protected]
